Getting treatment in Seoul: what it costs and where to go

Almost all medical tourism in Korea happens in three Seoul districts: Gangnam, Apgujeong and Cheongdam. They sit within three subway stops of each other and account for the large majority of clinics that treat foreign patients.

The practical decisions are which district to stay in, how many days each procedure needs, and how to book without a Korean phone number. Those three cause more trouble than choosing the clinic does.

Who ends up here

  • Anyone flying in for surgery. The hospitals with international departments are here.
  • Anyone combining several treatments in one trip — the density means you can see three clinics in a day.
  • Repeat visitors from Japan and Taiwan, who often book four to six clinics across a single trip.

Where to stay, and the mistake people make

The most repeated regret in visitor write-ups is staying in Myeongdong and treating in Gangnam. Myeongdong is the shopping district; the clinics are forty minutes away by subway with a transfer. One traveller put it plainly: “I booked my hotel too far away — I stayed in Myeongdong but ended up going to Gangnam all the time for treatments.”

Stay where you are being treated. Gangnam, Sinsa or Apgujeong for anything clinical. You will make the trip more times than you expect, and after surgery you will not want a transfer.

For stays over a week, a serviced apartment costs about the same as a hotel and gives you a washing machine and a kitchen — both of which matter more than usual when you are recovering.

The districts, and what each is like

AreaWhat it isWorth knowing
GangnamThe largest concentration. Everything from single-doctor clinics to large surgical hospitals.Highest search demand and highest competition on price
Apgujeong / CheongdamSmaller, higher-priced clinics. More surgical and contouring work.Where much of the domestic premium market goes
SinsaBetween the two, heavier on dermatology and injectables.—
MyeongdongTourist-facing clinics and shopping. Fewer surgical options.Larger Japanese-language presence than Gangnam

Getting there and getting around

From Incheon AirportAirport Railroad to Seoul Station then Line 2, about 80 minutes. A taxi to Gangnam runs ₩70,000–₩90,000 and takes 60–90 minutes depending on traffic.
From Gimpo AirportLine 9 express to Sinnonhyeon, about 40 minutes. Closer to Gangnam than Incheon is.
Between clinicsGangnam, Sinsa, Apgujeong and Cheongdam are two to four subway stops apart. Taxis are cheap but Gangnam traffic is not fast.
Paying for transportForeign cards work on subway gates now, but a T-money or WOWPASS card is still simpler. Kakao T often rejects foreign cards at registration — a common complaint from visitors.

What treatments cost here

Mistakes that cost people their trip

  • You are planning a three-day trip around surgery. Almost nothing surgical fits in three days once suture removal is counted.
  • You expect to book clinics from your phone after landing. Most Korean booking apps require SMS verification to a Korean 010 number, which you will not have.
  • You are visiting during Seollal or Chuseok. Clinics close for several days and people have had entire trips derailed by not checking. Confirm the calendar before you book flights.
  • You want to see six clinics in a day because they are close together. People do it and it is exhausting, and you make worse decisions by the fifth consultation.

Questions people actually ask

Which part of Seoul has the most clinics?

Gangnam, followed by Apgujeong and Cheongdam. The three are within a few subway stops of each other and hold most of the clinics that see foreign patients.

Where should I stay?

In the district where you are being treated — Gangnam, Sinsa or Apgujeong. Staying in Myeongdong and commuting to Gangnam is the most common regret in visitor accounts.

How do I book without a Korean phone number?

Most Korean booking apps will not let you register without SMS verification to an 010 number. Either book directly with a clinic that takes email or WhatsApp, or go through a facilitator.

How long should I plan for?

Injectables one day. Eyelid surgery seven to ten days. Rhinoplasty ten to fourteen. Facial contouring two to three weeks.

Do clinics close for Korean holidays?

Yes, and it catches people out. Lunar New Year and Chuseok shut most clinics for several days. Check the dates before booking flights.

Is it cheaper outside Seoul?

Somewhat, in Busan and Daegu. The trade-off is fewer clinics with foreign-patient experience and less English support, which matters more than the saving for most visitors.
