How painful are Korean skin treatments? A rough ranking

Most Korean skin treatments are commonly described as manageable, especially with numbing cream. Toning lasers and peels are usually the gentlest, injectable boosters and microneedling are often described as uncomfortable, and deep lifting can feel intense in bony areas. Pain is personal, so treat this as a rough guide and tell your clinic what you tolerate.

What readers ask

“Will Rejuran hurt as much as people say?”
“Can I ask for more numbing?”

Worrying about pain is completely normal, and it is one of the most common questions we hear. It is also one of the hardest to answer precisely, because the same treatment feels very different from one person to the next. What we can share is how treatments are commonly described, and what tends to make them easier.

Several things change how a treatment feels on the day: the area being treated, the energy level, how long numbing cream was left on, how tired or anxious you are, and even where you are in your monthly cycle. That is why two friends can leave the same clinic with very different stories, and why this ranking is a guide rather than a promise.

A rough ranking by how treatments are commonly described

Two treatments come up most often when people talk about discomfort: Rejuran around the eyes, and deep ultrasound lifting along the jaw and temples. Neither should be unbearable, and good clinics adjust as they go.

What actually makes it hurt less?

  1. 01

    Numbing cream, given time

Twenty to thirty minutes makes a real difference. Do not let it be rushed.

  2. 02

    Say what you tolerate

Tell the clinic before you start, and again during if needed.

  3. 03

    Ask about energy levels

Some devices can be adjusted. Lower energy can mean more comfort.

  4. 04

    Avoid a big night before

Alcohol and little sleep make most people more sensitive.

  5. 05

    Breathe and pause

You can always ask for a short break.

Does more pain mean better results?

Not necessarily. Some energy-based treatments are more effective at higher settings, but the right setting depends on your skin and the doctor's judgement, not on how much you can bear. A clinic that pushes you to tolerate more than you are comfortable with is not doing you a favour.

How should I plan uncomfortable treatments on a trip?

Put them early, leave a free day afterwards, and do not stack several intense treatments on the same day unless your doctor recommends it. The day after an uncomfortable treatment is a good day for a slow café, not a full shopping itinerary.

“Comfort is part of good care. You are allowed to ask for more numbing, a pause, or a gentler setting.”

When we sit in on consultations, one of the things we ask for you is how the treatment will feel and what the clinic does to make it easier. If a clinic brushes that question off, it tells you something.

What about the hours after?

Discomfort after treatment is usually milder than during it. Boosters and microneedling can leave the skin feeling warm, tight or tender for a day or so. Ultherapy can leave the jawline sore to the touch for a few days. Spot removal sites can sting a little under their patches. Clinics usually give simple aftercare advice: cool the skin, avoid saunas and hard exercise for a short while, and use gentle products. If pain increases after the first day rather than easing, contact the clinic.

Is anything here worth skipping if I am nervous?

  • Start with gentler options such as toning, peels or LDM on your first trip.
  • Ask whether a lower-energy or smaller-area version exists.
  • Avoid stacking several uncomfortable treatments in one day.
  • Remember that saying no, or stopping, is always allowed.

Quick answers

Is Rejuran painful?

It is commonly described as uncomfortable, especially under the eyes. Numbing cream applied for 20 to 30 minutes helps a lot.

Does Ultherapy hurt?

It can feel intense over bony areas like the jawline. Clinics can use numbing and adjust settings. Tell them what you tolerate.

What is the least painful Korean skin treatment?

Aqua peels, LDM and clinic facials are commonly described as barely noticeable. Pico toning is usually mild.

Can I ask for more numbing?

Yes. Ask at the consultation whether numbing is included and how long it is applied.
