Gangnam clinics: prices, what the district is actually like, and how to choose
Gangnam holds the largest concentration of aesthetic clinics in Korea — several hundred within walking distance of Gangnam and Sinnonhyeon stations. That density is why prices are lower here than in most of the world, and why choosing is hard.
Being on the same street means very little. Two clinics one floor apart can differ by a factor of three in price and by a decade in surgeon experience. Below is what actually separates them and what to check before you book.
Who ends up here
- First-time visitors, because this is what everyone has heard of.
- Price-sensitive patients — competition here is the reason Korean prices are what they are.
- Anyone wanting several treatments in one trip, since you can walk between clinics.
Staying in Gangnam
Hotels near Gangnam Station run ₩120,000–₩250,000 a night, serviced apartments ₩90,000–₩180,000 with better value over a week or more.
For recovery, the apartment usually wins: a kitchen matters when chewing hurts, and a washing machine matters when you are changing dressings.
If you are having surgery, ask the clinic whether they have an arrangement with a nearby recovery stay. Several do, and it is often unadvertised.
The districts, and what each is like
| Area | What it is | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Gangnam Station strip | Highest density, most advertising, widest price range. | Also where the most aggressive consultation upselling happens |
| Sinnonhyeon | Larger surgical clinics with more operating capacity. | — |
| Nonhyeon | Mixed. Smaller specialist clinics, including hair transplant. | — |
| Yeoksam | Quieter, more dermatology than surgery. | — |
Getting there and getting around
| Gangnam Station | Line 2 and Sinbundang Line. Exits 10, 11 and 12 open onto the densest clinic strip. |
|---|---|
| Sinnonhyeon Station | Line 9. One stop from Gangnam and closer to several of the larger surgical clinics. |
| Gangnam-gu Office Station | Line 7 and Bundang Line. Quieter, and where some of the smaller specialist clinics sit. |
| From Incheon Airport | Airport bus 6009 runs direct to Gangnam, about 80–100 minutes. Simpler than the subway with luggage. |
What treatments cost here
Mistakes that cost people their trip
- You are choosing by proximity to your hotel. The clinic matters; the block does not.
- You booked the cheapest quote on the strip. The lowest price in Gangnam usually means a junior operator, an older device, or fewer units than you assumed.
- You are walking in without an appointment expecting to see the doctor you researched. You will see whoever is free.
- You said yes to five procedures at consultation because they were all discounted together. Visitors report this repeatedly — different concerns, identical recommendation.
- You are relying on a translation app for a surgical consent conversation. That is the one conversation where it is not enough.
Questions people actually ask
Why are there so many clinics in Gangnam?
Domestic demand concentrated here decades ago and the cluster kept compounding. Competition between several hundred clinics is the direct reason prices are lower than in the US or Europe.
Are Gangnam clinics more expensive than elsewhere in Seoul?
Not generally. Apgujeong and Cheongdam run higher. Gangnam covers the widest range because it holds the most clinics.
How do I tell good clinics apart when they all look the same?
Ask three things: which specialty board the doctor is certified by, how many of your specific procedure they do a year, and what the price includes in writing. A clinic that answers all three plainly is already unusual.
Do I need an appointment?
For anything beyond a basic laser session, yes. Clinics that see international patients are booked three to seven days out, more in spring and autumn.
Is English support common in Gangnam?
Widely claimed, unevenly delivered. Ask whether it is a dedicated coordinator, an interpreter called in, or a translation app. Those are three different experiences.
What should I do about consultation upselling?
Decide your list before you go in and write it down. If a clinic proposes several additional procedures, ask what changes if you skip each one, and be willing to leave and think about it.
